If trees form the primary framework of the garden, this group of woody plants forms the natural bedfellows in completing the overall structure. Careful selection and placement of shrubs and conifers can ensure that your garden provides you with colour and interest all year round - even in the long dark months of a Scottish Winter.
As with all our stock, we do try to focus on providing:
- Varieties which are suited to our climate
- Healthy plants from known sources
- Ranges of plants for different situations
- Plants with differing seasonal interests
- Plants at different stages of maturity & prices,
from small young shrubs perhaps for a winter container to the same
cultivar as a large instant specimen.
Heathers and Bamboos
To this section we must also add heathers and bamboos. All our heathers
are from a trusted local source. At any time we carry a selection of
heather plants which will provide a welcomed splash of colour all year round.
Although bamboos are not strictly speaking shrubs, they are becoming
increasingly popular in the shrub or conifers domain, i.e. in creating an
evergreen/semi-evergreen focal point or screen. At Bennybeg we stock a range
of bamboos from small plants to large specimens with varying colours of
stems and leaves.
Focus on Conifers
Conifers are undergoing something of a renaissance in gardening,
not least in Scotland, where the variety of shapes and colours provide year
round structure to the garden.
In addition to hedging conifers we provide young inexpensive plants for
short-term use in containers, genuine dwarf varieties and large specimens.
Large conifers as specimens are most readily available during the winter
months of November till March. Though some pot grown examples are available
all year round.
My love is like...
Summer wouldn't be summer without the wonderful fragrance and bright colours of roses
At Bennybeg Plant Centre, we aim to provide a good range of Scottish grown roses
and varieties which we know will perform well. These include English,
Ground Cover, Climber/rambler, Minature/Patio, Remembrance/Celebration, Shrub,
Floribunda , Hybrid Tea and standards.
Typically in spring we carry in excess of a hundred cultivars. By prior
arrangement these may be available bare rooted during the winter months.
We also offer hedging roses both potted and bare rooted in season.
Hedging Plants
The appearance and purpose of hedges is diverse, and can include:
- Formal hedges i.e. where the individual shape of the tree or shrub is merged into a continuous straight line
- Informal hedges i.e. where the natural outline of the trees or shrubs is preserved.
- Hedges for screening.
- Hedges for defining a boundary
- Hedges as a windbreak
- Hedges to attract wildlife
At Bennybeg we can help you chose the correct plants for the desired effect and which plants will grow best in your specific location. We can perhaps also suggest a few examples of suitable plants which you may not have thought of.
In addition to the more common conifers and traditional hedging plants such as Beech, Privet and Box, we also carry a wide range of native species which are suitable for informal and wildlife hedges.
Bare rooted hedging plants are available during the winter months (November-March).
We are happy to provide quotations for the large numbers of plants which may be required for certain projects.
