Ornamental Trees

"The world divides neatly into two kinds of people: those who love trees in gardens and those who love trees in gardens but don’t yet know it."
Nick Dunn, Trees for Life

Trees to suit different gardens
Our huge stock of deciduous and evergreen trees will offer you varieties which create colour, focal points, visual interest, structure, screening and attract wildlife to the garden. In season we stock around 150 different varieties of tree.
We offer species which are suitable for contemporary or traditional gardens, for small town gardens right up to grand country estates! The vast majority are suitable for growing in Perthshire’s cold climate; some varieties may need the protection of a sheltered spot or south-facing wall to perform at their best.
Whatever the size, soil type and situation of your garden, we can help you select the right tree.

Please call us for further details.

Benefits of bare rooted trees

We stock bare rooted trees in season. They generally cost less than potted trees, are easier to transport and plant, and establish well.

They must, however, be planted during their dormant season, which is usually between November and March.

Our trees are also available throughout the year, containerised or pot-grown.

We generally stock trees at a less mature stage, which makes it easier to transport and transplant them, but larger specimens are available to order.

Key points to consider when selecting your fruit tree

• How much space have I got?
• Does the fruit tree need a mate to cross-pollinate with?
• Do I want to buy a mature tree or something juvenile that I can train?

The ultimate height of your fruit tree will depend, amongst other factors such as growing conditions and how you maintain it, on the rootstock. The ‘rootstock’ is derived from another plant and is selected for its vigour and ability to thrive in certain soil conditions.
Rootstocks range from the ‘Very Dwarf’ to ‘Very Vigorous’.

Not all fruit trees are self- fertile, and some varieties need a suitable mate to cross-pollinate with in order to produce fruit. Whilst fruit trees in neighbouring gardens may provide the right company, make sure by either selecting a second, compatible tree or a self-fertile variety.

Fruit trees are available at different stages in their development. The youngest is a 1 year old ‘maiden’ – depending on the variety, this is around 1 – 1.5m tall and will have side branches beginning to form. A ‘bush’ is around 2 years old and has numerous branches. A ‘half-standard’ has a clear stem of around 1.2m, is 3yrs+ of age and already looks like a little tree. Ready-trained fruit, in the form of fans, espaliers, step-overs and cordons are also available. Generally, the more mature a tree, and the more work it has had done to form its shape, the more expensive it will be to purchase. You can always start with a young ‘un and train in yourself!
